Q&A and Global Vibe Radio 059 feat. Ascetic Limited Founders Motionen

This week it’s the turn of Los Angeles audio-visual project Motionen to step up to the Global Vibe Radio decks for what is now our 59th episode.

Composed of Matt Salamone and Carlos Matamoros (a.k.a Altrd Being), the duo produce techno, acid, ambient and dub, and DJ both individually and as a duo. They are also the founders of Ascetic Limited, a young imprint that focuses on the driving sounds of acid, ambient, and deep techno. Since its fairly recent inception, the record label has come out with two strong releases, EPs featuring tracks and remixes by the likes of Christian Gerlach, Dorian Gray, HOBI, Deepbass and Motionen themselves.

2017 is looking like a busy year for Motionen. They began the year with a label showcase in Los Angeles featuring Deepbass and Reggie Van Oers and have just announced Mike Parker as the headliner of their next event in LA on June 24th. Musically they have upcoming release on Lanthan.audio and OFF white records out of Italy and are slated to perform at Synthetik Audio, a Movement weekend day party at The Works.

Enjoy the mix and read on for our interview with the duo and full track listing.

Listen: Chicago Duo Aathee Release “Road to Movement Detroit” Mix

It’s finally May, and for techno and house fans in North America the arrival of the fifth month of the calendar year heralds the nearing of Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit.

The three-day festival takes over Detroit’s downtown Hart Plaza with arguably the strongest techno and house lineup of the entire continent. But more than that, the entire city comes alive with a series of day and nighttime parties that literally take over every usable venue and bar in the Midwestern city.

Aathee is a studio collaboration and label founded by Happyghost and Hopscotch, two producers and DJs out of Chicago. Together, they have put together a 45-minute mix that is a perfect listen for the yearly pilgrimage to the birthplace of techno. Aptly named “Road to Movement Detroit,” the mix features all original unreleased sounds written and composed by Aathee and Friends at Mecca Studios Chicago.

Q&A and Global Vibe Radio Episode 057 feat. DJ Hyperactive

This week’s episode of Global Vibe Radio features one of techno’s OGs in the form of Chicago-born-and-bred DJ, producer and owner of 4 Track Records (4TRK) Joseph Manumaleuna aka DJ Hyperactive.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Joseph, or JoJo as he is affectionately known to friends, during my years working in Chicago’s techno and house industry. Prior to this interview I had last seen him on a cold Chicago night in February, when his good friend and fellow artist Moe Espinosa aka drumcell was in town to play at Spybar Chicago. JoJo played host at a wonderful BBQ dinner before an even better night of techno ensued.

Those versed in the history of techno need little introduction to DJ Hyperactive as an artist. His Resident Advisor bio describes him as one of Daft Punk’s “Teachers” and “brother of the humble,” his contributions and impact to the underground spanning three decades now and leaving a legacy that has not only helped shape techno in Chicago and the Midwest, but the entire United States and beyond. Growing up in Chicago in the early ’90s, DJ Hyperactive honed his skills as both a producer and DJ, receiving instant international recognition and subsequent touring gigs at some of the most recognized and revered venues and events of the last 20-plus years, including Orbit in Leeds, Liquid Room in Tokyo, Berlin’s iconic Love Parade, the game-changing Interface parties spearheaded by Droid Behavior in Los Angeles, Movement Detroit festival in the birth place of techno, Output in Brooklyn, techno meccas in Berlin such as Tresor and Berghain and of course at Smartbar, Spybar and Primary right in his home city of Chicago.

Over the course of his career he has churned out well over 100 remixes and original tracks, his catalogue including such instant classics as “Venus” and “Wide Open” on Missile, “25HRs” on Droid Recordings, “Music Box’ on his own imprint 4 Track Recordings, and more on imprints the likes of Contact, Truncate, Figure, Blank Code, Impact Mechanics, Nachstrom Schallplatten, and CLR, just to name a few. After a warming stint in Southern California, DJ Hyperactive returned to Chicago 2013 to reconnect with his family and musical roots.  His story continues with more gigs and more studio productions, with the difference being the experience and perspective that only a true veteran can possess.

We are honored to have him as guest of our 57th episode of Global Vibe Radio, which we present to you alongside an exclusive chat we had with him last week in honor of the recording. Enjoy the music and DJ Hyperactive’s wisdom below, full track list can be found at the end of the article.

Listen to 6 Hours of Fort Romeau on the Dekmantel Podcast

fort Rom

It’s generally accepted that an extended set is one of the only ways to truly experience a DJ in his or her element. It’s safe to say that Fort Romeau is in his element on this 6 hour journey through the Dekmantel Podcast.

Recorded at Corsica in London, the mix encompasses everything blissful about his sound. Striking an uncanny balance between house, techno, electronica, and ambient, Fort Romeau’s Dekmantel mix covers the spectrum. The talented DJ/producer has released on a variety of labels such as Spectral Sound and Live at Robert Johnson, and has a strong understanding of music that hits beyond the dance floor.

“I really like playing in this way. There’s so much freedom to shape the entire musical language of the evening and to make connections between disparate music that you just can’t really do in two or three hours at peak time. Corsica is one of London’s best spaces in my opinion, the DJ booth is rock solid with none of the typical problems of playing vinyl that plague clubs these days, the sound system is good and the crowd has always been great in my experience, so i was pleased to be able to take over the programming for the night.” – Fort Romeau

Mix of the Week: Djebali

DJ

House music is a feeling, and if there’s one person who has tapped into these feelings it’s French DJ/producer, Djebali. A certified vinyl guru and house aficionado, Djebali has made his mark on the scene through an array of original works and remixes for fellow groove gurus. His tracks have been supported by all the major players, and can often be heard throughout some of the best clubs in the world such as DC-10, WOMB, Fabric, and pretty much any institution that prides themselves in proper house music.

This week, the event in question is the highly regarded party at Clinic Wednesdays. With a low ceiling and intimate dance floor, it’s shaping up to be quite a weeknight affair. To get us in the groove, here’s a phenomenal mix that Djebali recorded for the Fasten Musique Podcast a few years ago.

Make sure to catch Djebali at Clinic Wednesday on October 21 – Guestlist + RSVP available here
