#909Day: Watch KiNK Improvise on a TR-909 for Soundwall

Kink BR

In celebration of 909 Day, producers, DJs and music fans alike are all honoring 33 years since the release of the Roland TR-909 by playing on the drum machine, listening to music produced with it or, in the case of Roland themselves, launching over 30 new products on the market via live stream.

There is no question that KiNK is one of the top artists in today’s electronic music scene, known throughout the world for his crafty and improvised live sets. In honor of 909 Day, the Bulgarian artist launched an improvised performance in exclusive for Soundwall, the leading electronic music Italian publication.

Earlier this month, KiNK released a brand-new EP which he made available for free download thanks to Red Bull Music Studios.

Red Bull Studios Paris Session with KiNK

Who doesn’t like free music? Fans of Bulgarian producer KiNK can now enjoy his latest EP, recorded in Paris’s Red Bull Studios, for free.

The artist, known for his impressive live performances, is now the eight artist to put out a free EP produced at the Red Bull Studios, on the footsteps of producers such as Pépé Bradock, Tom Trago, Svengalisghost and Feadz.

“I made a conscious decision to limit myself,” he confides, “and to use only what I could find in the studio to compose and record. I only brought two of my very favorite machines with me: an Acidlab Drumatix to make beats with and a Leploop – which I always bring on tour with me anyway – to make all these weird noises. Among the many instruments that were on-site, I picked a Rhodes MK 1 piano, a Moog Voyager, an acoustic drum kit and a clutch of vintage analogue effects, like the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase.

The goal was simple: to compose, record and mix three track in five days. It was a very intense experience, the clock was ticking and I had to learn how to play instruments that were new to me. So in short I had to quickly bound out of my comfort zone, which did me a world of good. None of this would have been possible without Rachel Row, who sang and played a couple of piano chords, and the studio’s sound engineer Jérome Caron, who gave me quite a bit of help with the arrangements.”

The EP is some brilliant KiNK work, the ultimate result of a true and long improv session rather than strict programming. With “Naive” listeners experience jazz-tinged electro-pop nugget carried by Rachel Row’s voice, a regular collaborator of the Bulgarian artist. On the other hand, “French Affair” is a more club-ready and instrumental-filled house track, both combining for a strong EP that is pure KiNK classic.

The whole EP has been made available as a free download via SoundCloud below:

KiNK and Kölsch To Remix Two Sven Väth Early 90’s Classics

Cocoon is set to release a two-track EP on April 15th containing remixes of timeless Sven Väth tracks by none other than KiNK and Kölsch.

KiNK, top-notch Bulgarian producer listed as #1 on Resident Advisor’s poll for Best Live Acts of 2015, is poised to put his signature on 1992’s “Accident in Paradise,” while Kölsch is remixing “Robot” from the 1994 LP The Harlequin, The Robot And The Ballet-Dancer. Both tracks saw plenty of dance floor play at Omen, the Frankfurt club Väth was part-owner of until its closure in 1998 and were originally released on Eye Q Records, the imprint he started together with Matthias Hoffmann and Heinz Roth.

Whereas KiNK’s influence turns “Accident in Paradise” into a true acid-influenced re-work, Kölsch’s product has a bigger more energetic sound. Both remixes clock in at well over 9 minutes without feeling drawn out.

You can listen to both clips on Wordandsound.

Track of the Week: Daniel Avery – Knowing We’ll Be Here (KiNK Remix)

Sunday’s a day to decompress and relax. KiNKs remix of Daniel Avery’s Knowing We’ll Be Here hits the spot just right. It’s difficult to try and remix a song that is so good on it’s own, but as we know from KiNK’s rapport, anything the madman touches turns to pure gold. The celestial and euphoric soundscapes of the original track are still kept in this remix, but KiNK adds his own housey flare that makes the track perfect for any big event or festival. Bonobo just recently dropped this song at CRSSD festival in San Diego – catch 6am’s full review on the event here.

You can catch KiNK playing his live set’s around the world. He just recently played at the legendary Berghain in Germany. He recently was at the 2015 NAMM show in Anaheim California testing out a few new pieces of gear (6am was lucky to catch an interview with him which can be seen here). No matter in the grimy corridors of Berghain, or the  sterile corridors of the NAMM show, this song will set a vibe anywhere its played.
