Q&A: Darius Syrossian, Who Needs Sleep?

darius syrossian press pic for balance for booklet 1

Outspoken and straight-forward, you’d be mistaken to label Darius Syrossian as brash. An artist that calls it as he sees it, the Manchester-based producer and DJ is coming off one of the busiest years of his career to date.

Labeled by Pete Tong as “one of Europe’s finest house DJ’s and one who has true pure house music running in his veins,” and spurred on by his work with the Do Not Sleep brand, Darius is the epitome of a true workaholic. 2017 has seen him A&R a label, run a radio show, play gigs throughout the world, hold a summer-long residency at Space Ibiza, and yet manage to be as relentless as ever in the studio.

This coming Saturday he will be in Los Angeles to headline 6AM’s Yearender party with Incognito, a warehouse affair that will see him perform for four hours past sunrise. Despite a hectic schedule that has seen him perform in Montreal and New York City over this past weekend, Darius found some time to sit down with us and talk about everything that went on in these past twelve months and more, including sharing his viewpoints on the current state of Ibiza and his plans for 2017.

Newest Hans

The spirit of techno is growing deeper and stronger in Los Angeles thanks to the relentless efforts of promoters in this city. The city of Angels is fortunate enough to have consistent quality events that remain etched into music lovers minds for years, thanks to the efforts of various groups and promoters.

One such group who has always led the way with their forward thinking bookings is Incognito. Incognito has booked acts such Jimpster, Ida Engberg, Maetrick (Maceo Plex), Heiko Laux, Joel Mull, among others, before the time of the major electronic music boom. Their success can be attributed to their keen eye and taste for music.

On September 12th, Incognito will be celebrating their 8 year anniversary with a double debut in LA. Coming all the way from Japan, Asia’s techno mecha, is A.Mochi. He’s is the man behind the scenes of Len Faki’s label, Figure, and an artist who has many collaborations with prominent figures in the industry. For the past two decades A.Mochi has influenced and shaped the music industry in many ways to what it is today.

Incognito’s other LA Debut artist to be feature is Hans Bouffmyhre who resides in the UK. His story begins in 2006 as a humble promoter. During that time he was directing and coordinating his event called “Sleaze”, and fast forward a couple years later and Hans has become a successful DJ and producer with ample experience under his belt. The name of this label? You guessed it, Sleaze Records.

The Los Angeles underground is in for another treat with this techno double header. Make sure to request the password for the event on the Facebook page so you don’t miss out on this memorable night.

House Therapy: Eric Kupper to Play for Incognito

Incognito show

Nothing is off limits for legendary producer Eric Kupper. Over his long career in the music industry he has established himself as a go-to producer for everyone from Cher to Frankie Knuckles (may he rest in peace). His catalog and résumé are incredibly extensive, and this Friday January 16th Los Angeles will get to see the master himself in action thanks to the team at Incognito. This weeks “House” Therapy is dedicated to Eric Kupper as we prepare for a night of true vibes and proper house music.

RSVP via Incognito’s Event: 25 Years of House w/Eric Kupper

To start Techno Therapy this week here’s a massive remix that Kupper did with Frankie Knuckles. Move Your Body (Directors Cut Signature Mix) is an iconic track that really was the house music anthem back in the day, and would still set the tone right for any party today. The elements of the track such as the pads, house stabs, and vocal hook make this a timeless piece, and is a great insight into the expansive work of Eric Kupper.

Next up is In Your Arms (Afrogroove Mix) with vocal treatment from Keiko Yoshimura. Not a club banger by any means, but a beautiful piece of house music that highlights his range as a producer. The drums have a very smooth yet subtle groove that give this track the laidback vibe, and the vocals by Yoshimura complete the track.

Last but certainly not least is an original track from Eric Kupper. Faith Healer is an excellent piece that can rock the club just as much as it can be enjoyed at home. Scattered shaker patterns with a jackin off hat provides the groove while Kupper introduces new elements throughout the arrangement. Just about halfway through when the strings come in is about when we imagine the dance floor starting to go wild just before a minimal tom driven drop rounds off the track.
