Techno Therapy: Sam Paganini

Sam Paganini Press photo

Fresh off appearances at Awakenings and Guendalina in Italy, Sam Paganini will be gracing the decks with a four hour set at Exchange LA this Saturday. He’s among many artists from Italy that have developed their own signature style of groovy techno, and has developed a deep understanding of the dance floor over the years.

Throughout his career, Sam Paganini has released EP’s and albums on esteemed techno labels such as Cocoon Recordings, Drumcode, and Octopus Records, and to honor his trip to Los Angeles we’ve picked three various releases from his techno catalog.

Enjoy the mid-week grooves and make sure to catch his extended set at Exchange LA this Saturday, July 18th.

Cocoon N

Sam Paganini – Labyrinth (Original Mix)

Labyrinth is a heady techno groover that found it’s way onto Cocoon Recording’s Compilation N. Sam Paganini elevates his creative and technical ability in Labyrinth and achieves electronic complexities that keep the mind and body locked in. The groove often associated with his Drumcode releases are the perfect compliment to the distorted chords that occupy the arrangement.

Released: September 8th, 2014
Purchase: Beatport

ChocolateSam Paganini – Chocolate (Original Mix)

In addition to being a regular on Cocoon, Sam Paganini has also found a welcoming home on Drumcode with groovy mainroom techno being his specialty. Chocolate gives us some insight into his sound as a Drumcode artist, showing his tight control over the various elements within the track. Even with a dominant groove Sam Paganini still recognizes the subtleties that make the track a cohesive arrangement.

Released: October 14th, 2013
Purchase: Beatport

OctopusSian – Famous Child Actor (Sam Paganini Remix)

Sam Paganini stepped up to the plate to deliver this remix for Octopus Records head honcho, Sian. Like he does so well, Famous Child Actor is a serious slab of groovy techno. It chugs along at a steady pace while continually layering and evolving into a mainroom weapon. Essentially…it’s the track that would be best served up on the Space Terrace during a Drumcode marathon, but hearing it on the Funktion One at Exchange LA is not a bad alternative.

Released: May 6th, 2013
Purchase: Beatport

Freebie Friday: Maceo Plex

Another Friday, another free track to start our weekend. Today the free downloads come courtesy of Maceo Plex, who will be taking the controls at Exchange LA this Saturday night. From running Ellum Audio to performing all over the world, making people move is one of his specialities.

With a pulsating bassline and ominous vocal, his remix of Chelsea Wolfe’s The Warden is the type of track that any fan of dance music can enjoy regardless of genre loyalty. On the contrary, Love Jam is a proper house number that will undoubtedly have you busting out your best dance moves.

Enjoy the free downloads, and make sure to catch him in action at Exchange LA tomorrow night alongside Rebolledo (Kompakt)

Throwback Thursday: Doc Martin

Doc and Sneak

Doc Martin will not only be recognized as a legend in Los Angeles, but in the world as well. Throughout his career he has worked among some of the most talented people in the industry, and has made a deep impact in the music community. Playing everywhere from Panorama Bar to Womb, Doc Martin has been spreading proper house music his whole career. Take a look at his biography for some more insight on his long and prosperous career.

This Saturday, Doc Martin will be accompanying Josh Wink at Exchange LA for their first set together in the past 13 years; so it’s only appropriate that today’s throwback is dedicated to Doc. Josh wink at space

Freebie Friday: Justin Martin

Justin Martin EXLAWhen it comes to high quality bass and house music, the Dirtybird crew can be considered master chefs. Luckily for us folks in Los Angeles, they’ve held down a residency this year at Exchange LA with many of their artists coming through to lay down dance floor heat. This Saturday the Dirtybird night includes Justin Martin, Jimmy Edgar, Justin Jay, and Christian Martin. We’re already more than excited, but here’s two free downloads from Justin Martin to help us get in the right mindset for the evening.

RSVP and pre-sale tickets are available on our Events tab.

Just imagining Justin Martin’s rework of Ultraista – Small Talk coming through the sound system at Exchange puts us in a good mood. It’s a fantastic bass heavy rework that has all the essential elements that give it that quintessential Dirtybird feel.

The second free download, Don’t Go (VIP) starts off with an ensemble of strings that rain down from the bass heavens. A beautiful compilation of strings only to fade into the deep bass and groove suited for the dance floor. The download is at the standard 320 bit rate, but head on over to the Dirtybird Drip.fm and there are some more goodies available there. (For a small subscription fee).

A big night ahead this Saturday for the Dirtybird takeover at Exchange. Enjoy these free downloads, and we’ll see you on the dance floor!

Apollonia had a busy summer playing worldwide, including individual sets at Circoloco and an Apollonia residency at Richie Hawtin’s Enter . Now that summer is coming to a close, the French trio are taking their sound across North America.

The tour starts October 10th in preparation for their new album release Tour à Tour, which will be released on October 20th. Apollonia will end up making their way to Los Angeles for a night at Exchange LA and then are also scheduled to play at Insomniac’s festival Escape: All Hallow’s Eve in San Bernadino.

Their album represents the smooth flow of music throughout their back-to-back-to-back DJ sets,  and their tour will without a doubt express the trio’s love and passion for the music.
