Why Kappa FuturFestival Is Worth Making the Trip For

Full disclosure: my first Kappa FuturFestival in 2012 didn’t take much traveling, but was nevertheless more than worth the trip. I lived in Milan then and reaching the nearby Northern Italian city of Turin (Torino) took less than two hours by train. By then the festival had undergone two editions and had changed format to become the first 10o% daytime festival in Italy, ranking as one of the top 5 electronic music festivals to attend in Europe.

I was surprised when I arrived at the venue of Parco Dora to be surrounded by tens of thousands who had come from not only just all over Italy, but also the rest of Europe. In a continent where you can find huge underground dance music events in every single corner, from the island of Malta that sits between Sicily and Northern Africa to quarries in Estonia and everything in between, it is sometimes a little difficult to understand how much Europeans travel in search of great music. Once you see it though, finding yourself surrounded by thousands speaking a myriad of different languages, you realize just how powerful the music is and how much draw certain festivals have.

Kappa FuturFestival is one of those events that attracts visitors from all over Europe. More recently though, it’s iconic location, seen in photos and videos that have been shared by the millions on social media, and quality-heavy lineups have been enticing crowds beyond the continent to make the trip to Torino to attend.

Earlier in the month festival organizers had announced that Carl Cox, Jamie Jones, Sasha & Digweed, Sven Vath and Tale of Us would all be playing the 2017 edition, all now receiving some star-studded company with the Phase 2 lineup announcement that came this week. Attendees at the futuristic Parco Dora will be basking in the sun come July 8th and 9th, enjoying sets by the likes of Seth Troxer b2b The Martinez Brothers, Nina Kraviz, Paul Kalkbrenner and the legendary Fatboy Slim.

More names will be added, of course, making music one of the focal points of this edition like all others in the past. The beauty of a trip to Kappa FuturFestival is the two-in-one deal you’re offered by the simple nature of its location. Turin is a majestic Italian city of industrial workers, the home town of automobile giants Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Rome, and also a city full of history and beauty. The city sits on the bank of the Po, Italy’s longest river, and under the watchful eye of the iconic Mole Antonelliana and the soaring Italian Alps, and is surrounded by some of Italy’s most significant and revered wineries.

A visit to FuturFestival means being able to choose from a variety of other travel options in Turin and beyond, beginning with the nearby alps, the nearby French Riviera or perhaps some of Italy’s northern lakes including the famous Lake Como. The cities of Milan, Genoa and Florence are also nearby and easily accessible by train, as are other locations in France and Switzerland.

Alongside you at FuturFestival there will be 40, 000 other techno lovers as well as the usual world class audio systems, high quality production and a real attention to detail including tickets through smartphones and Cashless payment technology on site. Always environmentally aware and with focus on sustainability, Kappa FuturFestival proves once again why it is one of the most heralded techno festivals in the world.

Carl Cox Announces Shows at Privilege Ibiza

If you thought the Carl Cox era in Ibiza was over you were definitely mistaken!

The iconic producer may have ended his Music Is Revolution residency by timing it with Space Ibiza’s closure last summer, but his parties on the island are far from over. Although we had already reported on Carl’s plans to play guest sets at several parties throughout the island, such as Circoloco at DC-10 or for his friend Marco Carola’s Music On series, he has now announced two PURE CARL COX events at Privilege Ibiza.

Carl Cox will be back for a series of special shows under the PURE CARL COX banner, starting on Tuesday 11th and Tuesday 18th July. Carl himself talked about the upcoming shows, “I’m really looking forward to getting back to Ibiza and to kicking off these special events with my awesome team from Space, Dave Browning, Eóin Smyth and the Game Over crew, and boy, have we got some parties lined up for you this year.  Starting with two parties at Privilege, I will be bringing my PURE festival vibes from Australia to the Main Room with a full techno and house line up. I cannot wait to rock this club. See you on the dancefloor… Carl :-)”

Privilege, recognized by the Guinness book of records as the biggest club in the world, was the natural choice as our new home after the sadness over the closing of Space subsided. Having housed many legendary events over the past 20 years, Privilege is going through a full re-fit including a Funktion One sound-system update that promises to make it one of the best in the World.  The club boasts a main room of epic proportions and plenty of other rooms to sample so they are perfectly primed for the return of the ‘King Of Ibiza’.

Q&A: Discovering Stephan Hinz

Stephan Hinz

A prolific producer for over a decade, Stephan Hinz is entering 2017 with a bang by introducing his fans to his brand new Off Numbers EP. Out on Carl Cox’s Intec DigitalOff Numbers follows on Stephan’s hugely successful previous releases on labels such as MOOD and Second State.

Out on the 27th of January, the EP comes in the form of two originals, both centered around heavy basslines and growing, frenzied crescendos. The title track is tenebrous, its hard-hitting drums a throbbing and threatening proposition that is augmented by a repeated melody. On the other hand, “Shaded” focuses far more on its bassline, interrupted by eerie percussions and metallic noises.

6AM caught up with Stephan ahead of the release:

Space Ibiza Set to Reopen in 2017 With Same Name But More Exclusivity

Carl Cox and Nic Fanciulli crown Pepe Rosello as the true king of Ibiza's nightlife during the last minutes of the club's Closing Fiesta 2016

Carl Cox and Nic Fanciulli crown Pepe Rosello as the true king of Ibiza’s nightlife during the last minutes of the club’s Closing Fiesta 2016

You would have been forgiven for thinking that 2016 marked the end of Space Ibiza as we knew it. Everything that we heard from Pepe Rosello, Space Ibiza’s former owner, Carl Cox and the Matutes family that own Ushuaïa Group and acquired the property seemed to point to a complete revamp and brand change. In fact in a specific interview Carl Cox, long-time resident at the club and personal friend of Rosello, indicated that the Rosello’s plan was to open a new club elsewhere on the island by 2018, thus keeping the dream alive of a Space Ibiza that still focused on music and less on the VIP lifestyle that is unfortunately permeating the island. Rumors even begun to surface of the exact location where this would be, the site now occupied by the Reco de Sol Hotel in San Antonio.

Yet, Periodico de Ibiza is now reporting that “businessman and former politician veteran Ibizan Abel Matutes Juan announced last night that the legendary Space Ibiza will keep its original nomenclature, while studying add a second name to link the venue to other franchises chain Such as Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Club or Hard Rock Ibiza.”

“It will surely open this year as Space. It is an accredited brand, which does not prevent us from adding a new name that links us with all the establishments we have,” said the former minister in the interview broadcast by local television Grupo Prensa Pitiusa. Moreover, Matutes went on to clarify that his company built Space Ibiza, explaining the long history that brought the club into Rosello’s hands, stating that “his business group built the discotheque located on the second line of Platja d’en Bossa and that after ‘five or six years’ of exploitation, and for his commitment to the hotel offer, decided to rent it to Pepe Rosello, who has run the premises since 1989.”

Matutes went on to confirm most of the rumors in circulation, stating that there are plans to convert the space into a more exclusive, luxurious club that cater to more “exclusive tourism.”
