Diggind Deeper at ADE: Steve Lawler Talks About His New Ibiza Residency, Vacations and Up-And-Coming Artists

A child of the Acid House generation of the ’90s, Steve Lawler has been pushing the gender boundaries for decades as a promoter, producer, DJ and of course as the head of the infamous VIVa MUSiC founded in 2006.

A constant presence in Ibiza throughout the summer, Steve earned his first residency on the island by handing in a mixtape at Café Mambo and the rest, as they say, is history. He continues to remain at the forefront of the electronic industry by constantly innovating and curating, both as a party curator, a label manager and of course an artist himself.

We caught up with him during his most recent U.S. tour, where he played clubs such as Coda in Toronto, Heart in Miami, Beta in Denver and Output in New York.

Hello mate, pleasure talking with you! How has summer treated you this year?

I have had a great summer thank you, its been an important start to a new chapter with my new ibiza residency. Played some incredible festivals and messy after parties. Every party I had the pleasure of playing this year was absolutely packed and with a great vibe. I had some great times with friends throughout the summer also in ibiza’s ever widening range of restaurants!

Any standout new-comers from this season that we should be keeping an ear open for?

Luuk Van Dijk, Franky Rizardo, Gina Breeze, Kellie Allen. All these are producing some of the hottest tracks out there right now.

Before your move to Hï, Warriors had been enjoying years of amazing parties at Sankeys Ibiza. What would you say the “secret” to the success is?

Dedication, truth, leaving your sweat on the walls type thing. Warriors was real, no bullshit no frills, just a proper party and people need this, they need and want the release, we all do. When I do something I give it my all..

Why did you decided to go boldly to the new venue?

The opportunity to be a part of something from its birth, something from the beginning is very exciting and this kind of opportunity doesn’t come along that often, So when it was offered to me I jumped all over it.

What are some key things the label is working on for the coming future?

We have some incredible music lined up all scheduled up till April next year already. Here’s just a sneak peak. Richy Ahmed, Jesse Perez, Groove Armada, Kim Ann Foxman, Gorge, DJ T, Mark Jenkyns, Amine Edge & Dance, Audiobully’s, Camel Phat, Skream, Luuk Van Dijk, Paolo Martini, Danny Serrano…plus many more. We have loads of unbelievable music lined up.

Your beginnings are rooted in a successful Ibiza residency, can you tell us a little about how you got it and how it helped you get to where you are now?

I have played in every venue on the island and been resident at Space, Amnesia, Pacha, Sankeys and now Hï. My very first residency was not a club but at a bar, Café Mambo and I got it by handing in a mixtape.

The island has gone through many changes since those years. Where would you say Ibiza is at now following this recent season full of changes?

Ibiza has changed but so has the world we live in. After seeing everywhere so packed that I played I would say Ibiza is still in a very good position.

You’re coming back to North America for some great shows later this month. Excited to be back on this side of the pond?

Yes very much so, and I think I’m playing the best venues in the best cities. Can’t wait to unleash all the new music I have lined up.

Toronto, at Coda, is one of the cities on your tour. How is it playing there, I hear the crowds are great?

I have always had a big connection and love for Toronto so its like going home for me. I love playing this city.

You also stopped at Heart, a club known for its long sets. What’s the longest set you’ve played this year so far?

This year? I think 6 or 7 hours? I don’t do the marathon sets like I was once know for.. but we’ll see (winks)

As we near the end of this super busy year for you I have to ask you… aren’t you tired?

Haha yes and no, I have just taken almost 9 days off and surprisingly I’m already missing playing music loud in a dark room! (laughs)

When are you taking a vacation for yourself? You’ve deserve it!! And where would you go?

I think Jan or Feb, I’ll take perhaps a month off and actually go nowhere! For me just staying at home in one place and not traveling for once is a vacation.

See you soon!
