Q&A and Global Vibe Radio Episode 057 feat. DJ Hyperactive

This week’s episode of Global Vibe Radio features one of techno’s OGs in the form of Chicago-born-and-bred DJ, producer and owner of 4 Track Records (4TRK) Joseph Manumaleuna aka DJ Hyperactive.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Joseph, or JoJo as he is affectionately known to friends, during my years working in Chicago’s techno and house industry. Prior to this interview I had last seen him on a cold Chicago night in February, when his good friend and fellow artist Moe Espinosa aka drumcell was in town to play at Spybar Chicago. JoJo played host at a wonderful BBQ dinner before an even better night of techno ensued.

Those versed in the history of techno need little introduction to DJ Hyperactive as an artist. His Resident Advisor bio describes him as one of Daft Punk’s “Teachers” and “brother of the humble,” his contributions and impact to the underground spanning three decades now and leaving a legacy that has not only helped shape techno in Chicago and the Midwest, but the entire United States and beyond. Growing up in Chicago in the early ’90s, DJ Hyperactive honed his skills as both a producer and DJ, receiving instant international recognition and subsequent touring gigs at some of the most recognized and revered venues and events of the last 20-plus years, including Orbit in Leeds, Liquid Room in Tokyo, Berlin’s iconic Love Parade, the game-changing Interface parties spearheaded by Droid Behavior in Los Angeles, Movement Detroit festival in the birth place of techno, Output in Brooklyn, techno meccas in Berlin such as Tresor and Berghain and of course at Smartbar, Spybar and Primary right in his home city of Chicago.

Over the course of his career he has churned out well over 100 remixes and original tracks, his catalogue including such instant classics as “Venus” and “Wide Open” on Missile, “25HRs” on Droid Recordings, “Music Box’ on his own imprint 4 Track Recordings, and more on imprints the likes of Contact, Truncate, Figure, Blank Code, Impact Mechanics, Nachstrom Schallplatten, and CLR, just to name a few. After a warming stint in Southern California, DJ Hyperactive returned to Chicago 2013 to reconnect with his family and musical roots.  His story continues with more gigs and more studio productions, with the difference being the experience and perspective that only a true veteran can possess.

We are honored to have him as guest of our 57th episode of Global Vibe Radio, which we present to you alongside an exclusive chat we had with him last week in honor of the recording. Enjoy the music and DJ Hyperactive’s wisdom below, full track list can be found at the end of the article.

The 55th episode of 6AM’s Global Vibe Radio comes from Curt Reynolds. The producer and DJ was raised on the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California’s San Diego, and has been making an impact on the busy electronic music scene over the past year.

With recent performances at Lollapalooza, Splash House, ME Cabo, Sound Nightclub and more, Curt Reynolds aka Ben Curtis, has had a sudden rise to recognition with a very promising future ahead. Now residing in LA, he brings funky, deep, and disco vibes that reflect his coastal upbringing and beach party mentality. Listen to 6AM’s Comprehensive Movement Detroit 2016 Playlist

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 10.52.26 AM

Techno and house and house fans rejoice!

With Movement’s 10th Anniversary just around the corner, 70+ day and after-parties to choose from and a plethora of artist playing the festival across three days and six stages, we decided that it’s time for the music to do the talking.

It’s likely that even the most seasoned of electronic music veteran is familiar with the more than 125 artists playing the festival this year, and it is for that reason that we decided to compile a special Movement Detroit 2016 Artist Playlist on SoundCloud for your use.

We scoured the entire SoundCloud platform for live sets and mixes from each artist playing in Hart Plaza on Memorial Day Weekend. We tried to post the most recent or telling piece of music compilation we could find for each name, in order to give listeners a fairly up-to-date understanding of the artist’s sound and what to expect from them in Detroit.

The result is a 119 track compilation incorporating over 165 hours of music organized in alphabetical order. Please be understanding that not every artist featured on the lineup had recent live sets or mixes available on the SoundCloud platform, while others had none at all.

We hope you enjoy it. Share the article with other friends making their pilgrimage to Detroit – music is love, and sharing is caring!

Oh and don’t forget to enter our contest for 2 GA tickets to the fest!

Listen to Over 128 Hours of Sets from BPM 2016

Photo Courtesy of: aLIVE Coverage for TheBPMFestival.com

The BPM Festival has come and gone, and many are left with the fond memories provided by the spectacular location and music from Playa del Carmen. From the vast showcases to all the world renowned artists, there was a musical experience for anyone regardless of ones taste in underground music. Many had the pleasure of journeying to Mexico for BPM to experience this in real time, but the vast majority are left to live vicariously through Be-at.tv or wait for the recorded sets to go live online.

With BPM 2016 officially in the books, we’ve compiled a playlist of as many sets from the festival as possible. Have a listen to some of our favorites below, and check out the BPM playlist for over 128 hours of grooves from 80 artists.

Apollonia at Ya’ah Muul

To be honest – there’s no bad setting to witness Apollonia in action, but BPM yields particularly excellent results.

Satoshi Tomiie at Groove Garden Session

An eclectic range of house and techno was the name of the game when Satoshi Tomiie took to the decks at Groove Garden

Kim Ann Foxman at Pets Recordings Showcase

FM tones, 303 basslines, lush chord stabs, and of course plenty of groove – Kim Ann Foxman had it all at the Pets Recordings Showcase

Luciano at Blue Parrot

Experiencing the Cadenza boss at BPM is about authentic as it gets. Although his set at Avalon Hollywood wasn’t half bad either…

Hito at Vatos Locos

Deep tech house in it’s purest form is what Hito provided the dance floor for the iconic Vatos Locos party

Valentino Kanzyani at Trust

It’s always a treat to see what Kanzyani pulls out of his record bag. BPM was no exception as the Slovenian was in top form at Trust

Josh Wink b2b Heidi at Knee Deep in Sound Showcase

Between the Ovum head-honcho and Queen of the Jackathon, this is a BPM back-to-back that you’ll want to listen to
