Against the Clock: Tin Man

Tin Man

Fact Magazine comes through again with another great episode of Against the Clock, this time with the master of the 303, Tin Man. This edition of Against the Clock provides a fantastic look into the workflow of Tin Man. After seeing what he can do in 10 minutes, it now makes sense how he can craft synthetic masterpieces while on his own creative schedule.

Tin Man’s main tools in this appear to come mostly from Roland instruments. Starting with a strong kick from the 909, he then adds heavily reverbed hits from the 707, and is very quick to start programming the 303 with his iconic “Tin Man” sound. The initial 303 lead/bass clearly hits on the low end of the spectrum, but given time he opens up the filters adding tremendous character and harmonics to the legendary synth. Once the resonant 303 lead comes to the forefront, he compliments it with an infectious groove from the 909 making it dance floor certified. Take a look at the video for yourself here:

Overall, Fact Magazine delivers yet again with another amazing segment of Against the Clock. Arguably one of the best things about the series is that it shows the power of getting “out of the box”. Artists who participate in the series employ various methods from turntable sampling to straight up jam sessions with their gear. This session is no different, with Tin Man conducting a brilliant jam with the tools at his disposal. Maybe we can take some inspiration from these Against the Clock jams and see what we can come up with on our own.
